Democratic Candidate Iroha Drops Out of County Executive Race

Back in March, Celeste Iroha registered her candidacy with the state of Maryland in the race for County Executive. Last week, she withdrew that bid due to health problems.

In a post on Instagram, Iroha told her followers, “It is with a heavy heart …with all the health concerns I have now raised up and everything, we are dropping out of the race.” She added, “My health comes first.”

Diagnosed with a growth on her vocal cords following an intubation for a surgery earlier this year, she also faces eviction.

Iroha was the first candidate to file for County Executive with the State Board of Elections. A health professional, she has worked as a Registered Medical Assistant and a Community Health Worker in the county for eight years. The chief plank in her platform was healthcare equity.

Unsure if she can still afford to live in the county, she ended her post with an endorsement of Council Vice President Will Jawando.
