Denny McCarthy Pays Tribute to Late Good Counsel Golfer, Makes Cut at First Career Masters

Takoma Park native Denny McCarthy made his first career appearance at the Masters golf tournament last weekend, using the opportunity to honor the life of Madison Smith.

Smith was a student and member of the golf team at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney. She died in October at the age of 16 after a battle with metastatic colorectal cancer.

According to McCarthy, Smith loved rubber duckies and the color yellow, which is why he displayed one on his golf bag at the Masters.

McCarthy used a round of 70, two under par, on Sunday to secure a tie for 45th and earning $57,200.

The Georgetown Prep alum came off a stellar performance at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio in early April, where his second-place finish tied for career best at a PGA Tour event.
