Department of Transportation to Offer Adult Bike and Scooter Classes

In collaboration with the Washington Area Bicyclist Associations (WABA), the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is offering adult bike classes in September, October and November to those 18 and over.

The classes will include “Learn to Ride” and “Basic Skills” sessions with scooter classes following select bike sections. “Learn to Ride” will consist of learning how to stop and start, balance, glide, pedal and steer a bike. “Basic Skills” is more advanced as students should already be able to ride a bike and will continue to practice basic skills.

“Biking is a great activity for recreation, exercise, or as a form of transportation,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Biking is a lot of fun and good for the environment as an alternative to using a motor vehicle. However, it is important to learn how to bike safely and responsibly. I encourage residents to take advantage of these low-cost bike classes and appreciate MCDOT’s efforts to offer them.”

Limited to 25 participants per class, registration in advance is required and will cost $10 for residents. However, WABA and Capital Bikeshare For All members will not be charged. Bikes and helmets will be provided for the “Learn to Ride” classes and may be rented for “Basic Skills” sessions.
