Driver in Deadly Beltway Crash Charged With Driving Under the Influence

Police said a man who was taken into custody following a deadly wrong-way collision on the beltway has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Jayleen Hannor, 23, of Macon, Georgia, is also charged with failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of a crash involving death, according to an update from Maryland State Police (MSP) on Wednesday.

Police said additional charges are pending further investigation. According to MSP, one woman died and nine people were injured in the crash Tuesday.

In Wednesday’s update, police identified the deceased woman as 36-year-old Elizabeth Velez of Easton, Pennsylvania. She was driving a Nissan Pathfinder with her three juvenile children as passengers, as well as a 36-year-old front seat passenger.

Velez, her three children — ages two, five, and 15 — and the front seat passenger were taken to hospitals. Additionally, a driver and four occupants — all adults — in a Lexus SUV were injured and taken to a hospital.

Police received 911 calls about a Mercedes CLS 450 going southbound in northbound lanes of I-270 near Rockledge Drive shortly before midnight, and the driver was later identified as Hannor.

According to police, Hannor was driving the wrong way on I-270 to the I-495 outer loop when he crashed into two vehicles at exit 34. He kept driving until he bailed and fled on foot in the Connecticut Avenue area.

He was taken into custody a short time after fleeing, according to police, and he was later taken to a hospital, where he is under police guard.
