Five Things to Know Today, Sept. 22, in Montgomery County

It’s Tuesday, Sept. 22 a frost advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. In the meantime, the 2020 General Election is 42 days away. Have you checked to make sure you’re registered to vote?

1. Council in Session: Montgomery County Council meets virtually at 9:45 a.m. Here’s a look at the meeting’s agenda.

2. School Board Virtual Business Meeting: Montgomery County Public Schools’ Board of Education has a virtual business meeting at 1 p.m. The community can watch the meeting on television on the following channels: Comcast Channel 34, Verizon Channel 36, and RCN channel 89. People can also participate via telephone by dialing 202-860-2110 using access code 171 064 1983. Here’s a look at the meeting’s agenda.

3. Car Free Day 2020: Montgomery County is celebrating Car Free Day by encouraging residents to get around the community without driving alone in a car. Try carpooling, riding Metro, taking the RideOn, e-scootering, biking, or walking. Take the Car Free pledge here. Residents can also visit the Montgomery County Commuter Services staff tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. for a chance to win a $200 SmarTrip card, Capital Bikeshare membership, and other gift cards. They’ll be located at Silver Spring, Germantown and Lake Forest Transit Centers, Shady Grove Metro, Bethesda Metro Plaza, and Friendship Heights (across from the Metro). They’ll also be giving out free hand sanitizers and face coverings.

4. Boxed Grocery Distribution: Upcounty Consolidation Hub is distributing boxed groceries to those in need from 2 to 4 p.m. at Germantown Elementary School.

5. Free Coronavirus Testing: Montgomery County is holding two free coronavirus testing clinics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at White Oak Community Recreation Center (1700 April Lane, Silver Spring) and in a Germantown parking garage behind Regal Cinema (located at 20002 Century Boulevard).
