Four schools in Germantown were placed on a heightened security status and temporarily secured during the first day of school after a shooting less than a half mile from Seneca Valley High School, according to Montgomery County police.

Around around 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday, security measures were taken to close off the campuses at Seneca Valley, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Germantown Elementary School, and Lake Seneca Elementary School due to police investigating the shootings, according to Montgomery County Public Schools. During that time no one was allowed to go in or out of campuses without close supervision, with monitored entry and controlled release. The secured action was lifted at 12:04 p.m.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 19500 block of Crystal Rock Drive. Two men were injured.

Police said no suspect information is available.

This incident comes after a string of recent gun violence in Montgomery County, including an August 19 fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in the Long Branch area of Silver Spring and an August 11 shooting that left another teenage boy wounded in the Fairland area near White Oak.

Investigators encourage anyone with information on the shootings to call Crime Solvers, the police department’s tip line, at 1-866-411-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous.
