Free Lyft Rides Offered for Cinco de Mayo to Prevent Drunk Driving

A local nonprofit will offer free Lyft rides on Cinco de Mayo to help prevent drunk driving in the Washington, DC region.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) will run its 2025 Cinco de Mayo SoberRide® service from 4 p.m. Monday, May 5, to 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 6. Riders 21 and older can receive a free Lyft ride, up to $15, by using a special promo code in the app.

WRAP will post the code at 3 p.m. on May 5 at www.SoberRide.com.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 34% of U.S. traffic deaths on Cinco de Mayo involve drunk drivers.

WRAP’s SoberRide program is also available during other holidays, including the Super Bowl, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween and New Year’s.

The service area includes Washington, D.C., parts of suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. That includes cities such as Rockville, Gaithersburg, Alexandria and Fairfax.

WRAP has provided nearly 95,000 free rides since launching the SoberRide program in 1991.

Sponsors of the 2025 Cinco de Mayo SoberRide campaign include Lyft, Anheuser-Busch, the Maryland Highway Safety Office and several others.

Founded in 1982, WRAP is a public-private partnership focused on preventing drunk driving and underage drinking in the region.
