Frustrations Build Over Bike Lanes on Old Georgetown Road

Following the deaths of two teenage bicyclists on Bethesda’s Old Georgetown Road in 2019, the State Highway Administration (SHA) looked to provide safer passage for pedestrians and cyclists. So last October, they installed bike lanes going north and south on the well-traveled road. A final report from the SHA will come later this summer. In the meantime, neighbors tell MCM what’s worrying them.

Since last December, a petition to “remove the catastrophically dangerous bike lanes on Old Georgetown Road” posted on change.org by a Rockville resident has drawn more than nine thousand supporters. Meanwhile, a Silver Spring post to support the SHA project has a little over two thousand.
