Drivers in Montgomery County can expect to face a new system for speed camera fines starting Wednesday. Fees will increase the faster a driver goes by a speed camera in Maryland.
On Tuesday, MCM heard from local drivers in Wheaton about how they felt about the new traffic policy, which could fine drivers up to $1,000 for speeding. In addition, law enforcement and county leaders discussed the changes at Marian Fryer Town Plaza.
“To kind of put a little bit more of a fire under somebody’s butt that the faster you’re going, the higher your ticket speed, I think that it’s something worth trying,” said Brianna, a Frederick County resident who works in the Wheaton area.
“We need good and reasonable laws here… as long as they’re being made off the statistics then we shouldn’t have a problem,” said Matthew, a Bethesda resident.
The $40 flat fee is being replaced. Going 40 mph or more over the speed limit will result in at least a $425 ticket. The new fine system is as follows:
- 12-15 mph over speed limit: $40
- 16-19 mph over speed limit: $70
- 20-29 mph over speed limit: $120
- 30-39 mph over speed limit: $230
- 40+ mph over speed limit: $425
- 40+ mph over speed limit in a work zone with workers present: $1,000
The ticketing scale gradually increases fees based on whether a driver is moving through a work zone.
