It’s Official: Rockville Announces Mayor, Council Winners

City of Rockville officials certified votes from the recent election and announced that Monique Ashton is the new mayor.

12,770 residents voted, which is a 3.9% increase as compared to the 2019 results.

The certified results did not change any of the winners announced more than five hours after the polls closed on election night.

Ashton received 7.298 votes. Her opponent and fellow councilmember Mark Pierzchala garnered 5,028 votes.

Voters chose six councilmembers from a field of 12 candidates. The winners were Kate Fulton, with 8,948 votes; Adam Van Grack, with 8,072 votes, Izola (Zola) Shaw with 7,612 votes; incumbent David Myles with 6,163 votes, Marissa Valeri with 5,995 votes and Barry Jackson with 5,962 votes.

The unsuccessful candidates were Paul Scott (5,017), Richard Gottfried (4,102), Anita Neal Powell (3,829), Ricky F. Mui (3,196), Daniel Belay (2,001) and Harold Hodges (641).

There were four non-binding ballot questions.

Voters made it clear they did not want 16- and 17-year-olds to vote by a margin of 8,665 to 3,601. They also voted down allowing residents without U.S. citizenship to vote by 7,926 to 4,208.

They also rejected creating representative districts to elect some or all councilmembers by a vote of 6,378 to 5,090.

They showed their preference for limiting elected officials to three consecutive terms by a tally of 9,267 to 2,786.
