Kensington Goes All American for Labor Day

Looking for a place to have some in-county end of summer fun this weekend? The Town of Kensington has a lot to offer.

An Artful Saturday

On Saturday they will be painting the town — literally. Artists with their easels and brushes set up all around the town to vie for prizes in the Plein Air Competition. Visitors can also check out live art demos like printmaking, pet portraits and fluid art.

At the Town Hall/ Historic Armory more than 200 artists present their work in a juried exhibition. According to the Montgomery Art Association (MAA) it’s one of the largest and longest running art shows in the tri state area. Visitors can purchase the art including paintings, prints, sculptures and notecards, and enjoy the live music provided by the Wilson Jazz Duo while perusing. The show is free and runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Saturday festivities end with the Bertha Clum Prize for Best in Show in the Kensington category. The prize honors a local artist and founding mother of the community. According to local lore, Clum suggested combining a parade and an art show during the early September holiday weekend.

All American Monday

Perhaps Clum inspired, on Monday the annual Labor Day Parade steps off at Plyers Mill Road at 10 a.m. and winds down to the Noyes Library. The lineup includes marching bands, dance troupes, equestrian groups and floats.

Festival fun on Armory Avenue keeps the Labor Day celebration going. It features food, wine and beer vendors, live music, bounce houses and family friendly games.  The Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
