Man accused of 80 garage thefts in Silver Spring arrested

A man accused of 80 vehicle thefts in Silver Spring garages that involved smashing windows and stealing what was inside was arrested by Montgomery County police.

For months, in the middle of the night, three Silver Spring public parking garages — Wayne Avenue, Ellsworth Drive and Cameron Street — were the suspect’s playground, according to police. Aware of surveillance cameras, police say he choreographed his moves to reveal as little as possible about his identity.

But on July 26, 2026 the suspected thief was caught in the Wayne Avenue garage at around 4:20 a.m. Police have identified the suspect as Xavier Jaylen Turner, 19. He was arrested leaving the garage in a scene captured on police body cameras.

The Montgomery County police created the video below to show how they ended his crime spree.

According to a report by WJLA, Turner caused nearly $20,000 in damages. In an interview, Third District Commander Jason Cokinos said MCPD also arrested another person committing parking garage burglaries earlier this year. He stated that car thefts in Silver Spring were down by double digits.

Cokinos added, “We hope others note you can’t come to Silver Spring and commit crimes.”
