D.C. Man Charged With Assault in 2 Incidents in Takoma Park

Takoma Park Police charged a Washington, D.C. man with first- and second-degree assault, concealing a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure and disorderly conduct.

Officers went to the Quality Inn on New Hampshire Avenue Wednesday following reports of an assault.

According to police, Gregory Andrew Maples, Jr., 31, verbally harassed an employee at around 8 a.m. When a concerned person tried to intervene to protect the employee, Maples brandished a knife, police said.

Before Maples used the knife, the victim disarmed him by kicking it out of his hand, police said. Maples then fled.

About one hour and 15 minutes later, Takoma Park police received a report that a man was stopping vehicles, shouting profanities and demanding that the drivers alter their routes. This occurred by the Caribbean Market on New Hampshire Avenue.

Officers arrived and took Maples into custody without incident. He was arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
