Maryland Charm make history, capture inaugural Women’s Lacrosse League title

For generations, girls and young women have had opportunities to play lacrosse at the youth, high school and college levels. What has been missing, however, has been a comparable professional destination.

That changed with the launch of the Women’s Lacrosse League (WLL), which crowned its first-ever champion this past weekend. The Maryland Charm defeated the California Palms, 16-13, in Philadelphia to capture the inaugural WLL championship.

The Charm featured a familiar Maryland lacrosse name in Alex Holman, who played her high school lacrosse at The Bullis School in Potomac. Holman scored three goals in the championship victory. Her third goal came with about five minutes remaining and proved to be the game-winner.

The WLL is part of the Premiere Lacrosse League, which was co-founded by Montgomery County natives and brothers Paul and Mike Rabil. The two have played a significant role in creating new opportunities for professional women’s lacrosse. The goal is to establish a sustainable professional platform for the sport.
