In the final House vote on Tuesday the measure to redraw the state’s congressional districts passed along party lines, 98 -36. The measure still needs Senate approval before it goes to Maryland voters as a ballot question in November.
After nearly four hours of debate, the Maryland House of Delegates gave preliminary approval Monday night to a redistricting bill proposing a constitutional amendment on congressional maps. MCM reported last week on how residents could sign up to testify on the measure. Republicans forced votes on 20 amendments. All of them failed.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, whose 8th Congressional District lies entirely inside Montgomery County, has pushed state Democrats to revive the effort.
Tuesday’s vote is the strongest sign yet that Raskin’s push is working.
