Masks Temporarily Required at Silver Spring School Due to COVID Outbreak

Masks are back in one Rosemary Hills Elementary School classroom.

According to a Sept. 5 letter from Principal Rebecca Irwin Kennedy, three or more individuals tested positive for COVID in one classroom during the past 10 days.

Therefore, the school gave out extra KN95 masks and instructed students and staff that they must wear the masks while in school for the next 10 days except while eating and drinking.

If not feeling well, students are advised to take a COVID test. If it is positive, they should stay home and report that to the school attendance office.

Individual schools and principals do not determine when masks must be worn. That is the combined responsibility of Dr. Kisha Davis, Montgomery County Health Officer, and Dr. Patricia Kapunan, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Medical Officer, according to MCPS Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight.

Whenever there is an outbreak, MCPS uses protocols that were established during the previous school year.

“Masking may be temporarily recommended or required in local outbreaks, high-risk situations, or, more broadly, when COVID-19 community transmission is high,” according to MCPS guidelines.
