MCDOT Honored for Helping Businesses Create Alternative Options for Commuters

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) Commuter Services Section was awarded with a 2023 Employer Services Sales Team Achievement Award for its work in creating and promoting commuter alternative programs to help businesses to retain employees while also reducing their carbon footprint, according to a press release.

MCDOT was recognized by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Commuter Connections Network at its 26th annual Employer Recognition Awards ceremony, which took place at the National Press Club in Washington DC.

The role of the Commuter Services Section is to work with employers in the county to provide more diverse methods of transportation for employees and reduce the amount of single-occupancy drivers. MCDOT is responsible for program design, promotion and employee participation, as well as providing county, state and federal resources, while the businesses are in charge of implementing the programs.

Last year, the six sales representatives from Commuter Services made over 13,300 contacts and held over 200 meetings with employers in the county. Rockville-based Abt Associates is one of the employers that works with Commuter Services. They won this year’s Telework Award for their extensive remote work system, which led to a reduction of 1,720,330 vehicle miles of travel (VMT) and annual savings of over 78,000 gallons of gasoline. Eight other local employers working with MCDOT also received honorable mentions for their commuter programs, according to the press release.

“The MCDOT Commuter Services team has set the standard regionally for creative commuter solutions,” MCDOT Director Chris Conklin said in the press release. “Through their efforts, we have seen a shift in how those who work and live in Montgomery County commute. By engaging with local employers, we have been able to encourage a shift toward multimodal transportation, promoting a greener and more active lifestyle. These programs will serve as a regional model.”

Any business in the county looking to expand its commuter options and benefits can contact MCDOT’s Commuter Services Section by calling 240-777-8382 or emailing commuter.services@montgomerycountymd.gov.
