MCM Polls Social Media on ‘Away All Day’ School Cell Phone Policy

MCM posted its original survey on Instagram. But Reddit soon took over the debate and feedback when a screenshot of the MCM Instagram post popped up on that social media platform. Redditors didn’t hold back with their opinions on a Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) “Away All Day” cell phone policy.

There were more than 140 comments with the overwhelming majority agreeing with the “Away All Day” policy. See the Reddit post and discussion here.

People who support the policy point to fewer distractions, improved student focus and cyberbullying prevention.

Some MCPS schools already pilot the “Away All Day” policy, which requires that students do not use their cellphones throughout the entire school day.

The Board of Education will discuss “Away All Day” at their meeting on Thursday, May 8.  Members will review the pilot program now in progress.

In nearby Howard County a new policy effective in early March states all students must keep phones away and silenced from the first to last bell.

Fairfax County in Virginia imposes phones away restrictions according to grade with K-6 phones silenced and stored in backpacks all during the school day. Older students are allowed phone use at breaks from instruction periods.

Parents recently circulated a letter collecting signatures in support of a systemwide policy.
