MCPS Assesses School Buildings

Over the last school year Montgomery County Public Schools initiated a study of the conditions of its schools, offices and holding areas.

The assessments, conducted by an independent engineering firm Bureau Veritas, evaluated roofs, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems of 41 elementary schools and 14 middle and high schools.

The firm targets the end of the 2025-2026 school year to complete its evaluations.

Schools get rated from zero to one. The closer to zero, the more sound the facility. The Facility Condition Index (FCI) uses Depleted Value as the means to rate the buildings.

Here is a list of the elementary schools with the highest Depleted Value in this round of evaluations:

  • Monocacy
  • Piney Branch
  • Burning Tree
  • Meadow Hall
  • Westover
  • Cold Spring

Middle schools and high schools with the highest Depleted Value include:

  • Former Rockland Terrace School
  • White Oak MS
  • Blair G. Ewing Center
  • Magruder HS
  • Wootton HS

According to the MCPS website, the FCI data alone will not determine when and where restorative construction projects will occur.
