Students from five Montgomery County Public Schools have advanced to the state finals of the Math, Engineering and Science Achievement program (MESA).
The students attend Barnsley Elementary in Rockville, Clemente Middle School in Germantown, Hallie Wells Middle School in Clarksburg, Kennedy High School in Glenmont and Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville.
MCPS held the regional competition Thursday in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and the MCPS Information Technology Foundation.
Participating students shared their projects, which included themed storybook rides, trash-cleaning robots, spaceships and wearable devices that alert athletes to potential heat exhaustion. There were also projects focused on having students identify and address a societal concern for the National Engineering Design Challenge.
Overall, 27 projects were submitted on behalf of MCPS. Judges included volunteers from the public schools and representatives from First Chesapeake and the Montgomery College STEM Club, who judged the projects virtually based on MESA rubrics.
All first-place winners will advance to the MESA State Competition on May 2 in Laurel.
