MCPS to end gymnastics as varsity sport

Gymnastics will no longer be a varsity sport for Montgomery County public high schools following the spring 2026 season.

Citing a lack of participation with only seven schools fielding teams, as well as concerns with high costs and facilities, the county athletic association approved to eliminate the sport. An official announcement is expected this week.

Currently, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Montgomery Blair, James Hubert Blake, Sherwood, Springbrook, Walter Johnson and Walt Whitman have girls gymnastics teams.

Montgomery County is the last county in the state of Maryland with girls gymnastics as a varsity sport.
