Montgomery College Gets Funding to Help Displaced Federal Workers Become Teachers

It’s called “Fed to Ed”. Montgomery College will get funding to help displaced federal workers become teachers.

During a roundtable discussion at Montgomery College Rockville on Tuesday, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced grant funding for higher education institutions statewide to address the teacher shortage while supporting fired federal workers, per a release from the Governor’s office.

Higher education institutions will be able to help federal workers get jobs in education through training, licensure support, and school district partnerships. The Maryland Higher Education Commission will give $1 million in grants to 11 colleges and universities — including $100,000 for Montgomery College.

County Executive Marc Elrich, who attended the roundtable, said during a media briefing Wednesday, “Like most jurisdictions, Montgomery County is facing a teacher shortage, and the governor made a compelling case that we need to move faster to get qualified people into our classrooms, and I agree.”

In a written statement, Montgomery College President Dr. Jermaine Williams said that through the grant, the college’s program for alternative certification for teachers will be strengthened — “Drawing on the talent and commitment of federal workers will empower students in Maryland to achieve even more.”
