Montgomery County leaders declare snow emergency, limiting parking and closing buildings

A significant winter storm is expected to bring snow just around midnight, according to the National Weather Service’s Baltimore/Washington Office, prompting Montgomery County leaders to upgrade Friday’s cold alert to a snow emergency, which went into effect Saturday at 6 p.m.

Here’s what to know about how the county’s snow emergency may affect you:

County Buildings
All county libraries, recreation centers, Alcohol Beverage Services stores and the Shady Grove Transfer Station are closed Sunday. For up-to-date snow-related information, go to the County’s Snow Information Portal.

Transportation
RideOn buses will operate on a reduced schedule Sunday. Visit RideOnBus for a list of operating routes and schedule specifics after the first snowfall.

During a snow emergency, taxicabs are permitted to charge an additional $2.50 per trip.

Parking
Parking in all covered county-operated  garages is free during the snow emergency. Parking is restricted on posted snow emergency routes and posted surface parking lots. When possible, residents are urged to park in private driveways and garages to keep their vehicles off the roads and allow the plows get by. Where street parking is unavoidable, the side of the street where vehicles are allowed to park will alternate by day to allow for snow clearing.

If residents must park on the street on non-snow emergency routes from Saturday night through Monday, residents should only park on the side of the street with even-numbered addresses. If emergency conditions persist, residents must to move their cars to the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27 or risk fines.

Additional details on snow emergency vehicle parking restrictions include:

    • Parking is permitted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on the side of any street or highway with even street numbers.
    • Parking is permitted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on the side of any street or highway with odd street numbers.
    • On any block where parking is prohibited on one side of the street for the entire block, the parking prohibition is superseded by the day of week provisions described above during the snow emergency period. Any vehicle parked and left unattended in violation of these provisions may be removed and impounded.
