For the first time in more than 70 years, professional women’s baseball has returned to the United States. The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) just launched its inaugural season, creating a professional pathway for women to play baseball at the highest level.
The league’s four inaugural teams are based in Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. But the WPBL has a meaningful connection to Montgomery County.
Silver Spring native Stephanie Everett plays for the Boston Hunters. She was drafted 69th overall in the league’s first draft.
To celebrate the new league, Montgomery County Recreation is hosting a WPBL watch party on Sep. 3 at the Good Hope Recreation Center in Silver Spring. New York versus Los Angeles will be shown on the big screen. The event starts at 6 p.m.
