A series of crashes involving nine vehicles early Wednesday morning on eastbound MD-200 near Exit 8 left several people injured, according to Montgomery County police.
The crashes led to the partial closure of MD-200, as drivers were merged into a single lane to bypass the incidents. Traffic was backed up for about two miles, with additional delays in the westbound lanes as onlookers slowed to view the wreckage.
Police, firefighters and ambulance crews responded to the area and treated victims while collecting statements from the passengers involved. Several vehicles sustained severe damage, including one that caught on fire. Tow trucks remained on standby to remove vehicles once the on-site investigation concluded.
The identities and conditions of the injured are unknown.
The investigation remains ongoing. Updates will be provided as additional details are released.
