It’s not often a baseball player gets to don the cap of his hometown team, but that’s the case for Potomac, Maryland native Matt Mervis, who signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals, with an invitation to spring training. Mervis attended Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda and was originally selected by the Nats in the 2016 MLB draft, but opted to play baseball at Duke. After going undrafted in 2020, Mervis signed a free-agent deal with the Cubs and recently spent time playing first base for the Miami Marlins.

Mervis was a captain and standout at Georgetown Prep, playing three years of varsity baseball. In 2016, Mervis was an All Star in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League for the Silver Spring Thunderbolts.
The Nationals do not have a clear-cut starter at first base, so 27-year-old Mervis has a very good chance of providing depth at that position for the upcoming 2026 baseball season.
