New Police Station in Gaithersburg Will Be County’s First Energy-Efficient Public Building

Montgomery County broke ground on a new 6th District County Police Station in Gaithersburg last Thursday.

The station will be the county’s first sustainably designed and energy-efficient public building, according to a Montgomery County press release.

The station is scheduled to open in spring of 2025 at the intersection of Interstate 270 and Watkins Mill Road. It will serve the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities and replace an outdated facility.

The building will utilize microgrid technology and onsite power generation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The station is designed to meet the county’s carbon neutrality goals.

“The MCPD 6th District Station will be conveniently located, will be a sustainable building that is powered by solar and will operate off of its own microgrid allowing it to continue operation when electric or power failures occur,” County Executive Marc Elrich said in the press release.

County Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz and Sidney Katz joined Elrich at the groundbreaking.

“Almost 20 years in the making, I am excited to see this vital project moving forward,” Katz, who represents Gaithersburg, said in the press release. “As the third busiest police district in the County, the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities need to have a police station equipped to fully meet their needs.
