Parents Continue to Demand Opt-Out Option For LGBTQ Stories In Schools

Parents continue voicing their demand for an opt-out option for LGBTQ+ stories in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

A few rallies have been organized outside the MCPS Board of Education meeting building, ahead of school board meetings, where participants also testify to their demands.

Kareem Monib, President of the Coalition of Virtue, said organizers are planning to have a slate of candidates for next year’s election.

Parents who want the opt-out option said they plan to continue rallies until they have it. Parents — on both sides of the issue — said they plan to keep showing up.

The rally was held by Family Rights for Religious Freedom, of which the Coalition of Virtue is a member, and others.

Per MCPS, state law dictates families can only opt-out of classes specifically about human growth and sexuality. MCPS will end opt-outs starting next school year in reading literacy classes and other curriculums not strictly focused on human growth and sexuality. The school system has chosen six picture books involving LGBTQ+ for literacy classes for elementary schoolers.
