Parents Share Concerns on Proposed Closure of Silver Spring International Middle School

A growing number of parents and students are speaking out about their concerns about a proposal to eventually close down Silver Spring International Middle School, a nearly 100-year-old campus located on Wayne Avenue that is in dire need of repairs.

Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Taylor, Ph.D., shared the plan Monday, which was met with mixed reaction. Tuesday night, MCM joined a Parent Teacher Student Association meeting at the school to hear from the school community to hear more about their concerns.

I think it took our community off guard, so we’re still processing it,” said School PTSA President Megan DiNicola.

The aging facility also presents safety concerns due to the Purple Line construction happening right the school, an issue addressed by the superintendent at the rollout of his plan.

The superintendent’s idea is to instead use the building as a holding school, where middle and high schoolers can go if their own school is under construction. SSIMS students would be absorbed into Eastern and Sligo middle schools, both of which he recommends be updated.
