montgomery county animal shelter over capacity

Montgomery County’s open admissions shelter is seeing more pet surrenders as families face job loss and financial hardship. The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center announced Friday that it is expanding resources for pet owners in the county who are facing hardships.

Expanded Resources for Pet Owners

To prevent pet surrenders, the animal adoption center is offering:

  • Expanded pet food pantry days and hours at multiple locations around the county (see image below for days, hours and locations)
  • Free behavior consultations with certified dog trainers
  • Weekly rabies vaccination clinics, with microchips available for $10
  • Low-cost spay and neuter services for income-qualified residents

How the Community Can Help

“The shelter environment is an extremely stressful environment for an animal,” according to a statement, highlighted in red, posted to the top of the county’s animal services website.

The pet adoption center is asking residents who are in a position to help to adopt, foster, donate, or volunteer at the animal shelter to ease its capacity challenges.

The center is located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. Hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The shelter is closed on Wednesdays.
