Police chase ends with teen arrested on gun and burglary charges

Police have arrested a 17-year-old from Washington, D.C., and charged him as an adult in connection with a burglary investigation involving a privately-made firearm.

The chase and arrest were captured here.

Last Friday at about 8:57 p.m., officers were conducting proactive enforcement in the area of Sligo Avenue and Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring when they were flagged down by a resident. The resident reported that a group of people had entered a construction area within an apartment building in the 800 block of Sligo Avenue and that the group was also gambling in a stairwell.

Officers responded to the location and observed the group in the stairwell throwing dice with cash on the ground. As officers approached, one person, later identified the teen, attempted to grab a satchel. An officer secured the satchel and immediately recognized the presence of a firearm inside. The teen ran out of the building. Officers chased him through the neighborhood and located him hiding underneath a vehicle in a parking lot in the 700 block of Sligo Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

Upon closer inspection, officers determined the handgun to be a loaded 9mm privately-made firearm, also known as a “ghost gun.”

Officers determined that the 17-year-old is prohibited from possessing firearms because he is under the age of 21.

He was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was charged as an adult with fourth-degree burglary, obstructing and hindering, and firearm-related offenses. He is being held without bond.
