Public Weighs In on New Traffic Stops Law

On Tuesday evening, the Montgomery County Council held a forum to listen to the public’s thoughts about the Freedom to Leave Act.  Proposed by Councilmember at Large Will Jawando, the law reinforces a driver’s right to refuse consent of the search of their vehicle when they are pulled over by a police officer.

The witnesses held often widely divergent views on the proposed law. Here’s a sampling of their testimony including State’s Attorney John McCarthy who expressed his thoughts at the hearing.
