Race to Replace Sen. Cardin Already Heating Up

On Monday, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin announced he will not seek re-election in 2024. It didn’t take much time for people to start announcing their intentions.

So far, Montgomery Councilmember-At-Large Will Jawando and Jerome Segal, who espouses his Bread and Roses Socialism platform, have said they will run for the seat Cardin has held since 2007.

Jawando is a Silver Spring native, and Segal is a Silver Spring resident. Segal ran against Cardin in the June 2018 Democratic primary. Cardin gained 80% of the vote to Segal’s 3%.

Two U.S. Representatives, Jamie Raskin (MD-8) and David Trone (MD-6), are possible candidates. Trone told MCM he wasn’t ready to announce his decision but expected to do so shortly, possibly within a week.

Raskin is recovering from diffuse large B cell lymphoma and has successfully completed his chemotherapy treatments. He did not immediately respond to MCM about his plans.

Previously, he told MCM that he needs to gain his strength back and continue his work on Capitol Hill before making any future plans. He also noted that he always wants to represent Maryland.

Trone, who previously funded his own campaigns and owns Total Wine and More, expanded his name recognition following the state’s redistricting.

As of the November 2022 election, his district which previously included much of Montgomery County, includes only Gaithersburg. With the new configuration his district now includes all of Frederick County and parts of Washington, Alleghany and Garrett counties, traditionally more conservative areas.

Prince Georges Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks name has also been mentioned as a likely candidate. According to several news reports, she has begun hiring staff for a possible run. Another person showing interest is Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski.

Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown, only recently appointed State’s Attorney General, could also be interested.

Earlier, former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced he was not interested in serving in the Senate.

When asked, Cardin said he was confident his seat would be held by a Democrat. He also said he did not plan to endorse a candidate.
