County Hosts Remembrance Ceremony for International Overdose Awareness Day

The county will recognize the losses of people who died by drug overdose at the upcoming Remembrance Ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Memorial Plaza.

In honor of International Overdose Awareness Day and National Recovery Month in September, the county aims to destigmatize and increase awareness of overdose-related deaths.

According to the state’s Department of Health, Maryland reported 1,768 overdose deaths in 2024, with 83 taking place in Montgomery County.

The Department of Health and Human Services invites those who have lost loved ones to overdose to submit photos for memorial displays and light candles in their honor. The deadline to submit a photo is Monday, Aug. 18.

In addition to the vigil, the county will offer free tours of the Community Opioid Prevention and Education (COPE) trailer. The trailer, run by the Montgomery County Police Department, aims to teach residents about the warning signs of drug abuse. The event will also include a resource fair and food trucks.

The resource fair will be available at 5:30 p.m., with a Candlelight Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. The event will take place at 101 Monroe Street in Rockville. Interested parties can find more information on the County Government website
