Richard Montgomery Grad Urges Fashion Industry to Use Sustainable Fabrics

Richard Montgomery High School graduate Lexy Silverstein cares about fashion. But she also cares about the Earth.

The 20-year-old from Rockville intends to make a career out of helping people choose sustainable fabrics, shopping at thrift stores and swapping clothes with friends.

Silverstein attends Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, a school she partially chose because of its commitment to sustainability.

But when she learned that her college awards scholarships from Shein, which bills itself as an affordable woman’s fashion business, Silverstein was horrified. The company, according to Silverstein, represents much of what she thought her school was against.

She created a Change.org petition entitled, “End FIDM Partnership with SHEIN, Global Fast Fashion Polluter.” As of Wednesday, the petition had 4,368 signatures.

“It just seems so hypocritical,” she told MCM, adding she believed the school could find much better fashion companies to sponsor scholarships.

Silverstein has been blogging about fashion since her middle school days at Julius West.
