The life sciences hub that Montgomery County is renowned for got renewed energy Friday as an acquired manufacturing company pledges to retain 140 Rockville jobs and continue its operations in the area.
Bora Biologics is a drug manufacturing facility based in Taiwan with operations in Rockville. Last year, the company participated in a job fair for scientists displaced from their federal jobs. Bora acquired the local manufacturing facility from MacroGenics’ Good Manufacturing Practices for $122.5 million. They pledged to continue to make products for MacroGenics while also offering expanded contract manufacturing capacity for other pharmaceuetical companies.
County Executive Marc Elrich and Council President Natali Fani-González were on hand with state leaders to mark the announcement.
Elrich said he is happy they’ve retained all the employees and excited to see the company’s future investment in the community.
“Our highly educated and diverse community, and our ongoing investments in workforce development and innovation lead to more jobs here and also ensure the next generation of life-saving therapies can be developed and produced right here in the County,” said Elrich in a statement.
The acquisition and continued manufacturing operations in the county follows a wave of international companies making investments along the I-270 corridor.
“It’s important that we celebrate this moment and continue to share all the incredible economic development assets Montgomery County has to offer for businesses across the globe.”
The expansion also adds momentum to a growing number of contract development and manufacturing organizations, companies that help drug and biotech firms develop, make, and sometimes package their medicines instead of doing it themselves, said a spokesperson for Montgomery County in a statement.
In May, Bora Pharmaceuticals was recognized as one of Time magazine‘s “World’s Growth Leaders of 2026,” ranking 99 in the top 100 companies.
Maryland economic leaders, including Secretary of State Susan Lee, Department of Commerce Secretary Harry Coker Jr., Jared Smith, president and CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation and Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton were also on site for the announcement.
