Rockville’s Wootton area families meet with MCPS’ Taylor for tense discussion on relocation plan

As a major vote on the future of Wootton High School approaches, frustrated families are speaking out . The MCPS superintendent is now responding, meeting with parents on Tuesday for a heated discussion in the Wootton auditorium in Rockville.

Superintendent Thomas Taylor’s recommendation to relocate students and staff from the aging campus at Wootton to Gaithersburg’s new Crown High School was met with boos from attendees and little support.

Many Wootton-area parents want to keep the school community in place and are advocating for school board’s March 26 vote to be delayed. One group of parents said it is prepared to file a lawsuit if the plan goes forward.

The group said they have already filed a complaint with the county inspector general, the state Office of the Inspector General for Education and the State Department of Education.

Some in attendance said they support the move out of Wootton’s building, which has verifiable maintenance issues, including HVAC problems. They are in favor of going to Crown, which MCPS calls a state-of-the-art facility.

The upcoming school board vote will include multiple boundary recommendations, in addition the recommendation to relocate Wootton. The plan includes converting the building into a holding school for campuses under renovation.
