Senior Smart Series: Closing The Generational Digital Divide

Our Education and Community Engagement Senior Smart Series where the wisdom of the older generation meets the tech-savviness of high school students! We believe in the power of intergenerational connections and have created a unique series that pairs enthusiastic young minds with experienced senior citizens.

In these sessions, our compassionate students take the time to patiently teach seniors how to navigate their smartphones and media technology. These training sessions empower our seniors to stay connected with loved ones, explore the digital world, embrace the wonders of modern technology and amplify their community voices. The exchange of knowledge, laughter, and companionship, bridges the generation gap and fosters meaningful relationships that go beyond the screens. Pairing younger people with older individuals offers numerous benefits for both age groups and society as a whole.

  1. Bridging the Generation Gap: Technology can sometimes create a disconnect between generations due to differences in exposure and familiarity. By bringing younger and older people together, we foster mutual understanding, break stereotypes, and create a more cohesive society.
  2. Empathy and Patience: Younger individuals tend to have a natural aptitude for technology, and through teaching seniors, they develop empathy and patience. These qualities are essential life skills that promote compassion and understanding in all aspects of life.
  3. Enhanced Learning Experience: When teaching others, young people solidify their own understanding of technology. Teaching someone else requires breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms, reinforcing their knowledge in the process.
  4. Social Interaction: Seniors, especially those who may be isolated or living alone, benefit from the social interaction and companionship that these sessions provide. It helps combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, contributing to improved mental and emotional well-being.
  5. Boosting Confidence: As older individuals learn to use smartphones and technology, they gain confidence in their abilities. This newfound confidence extends beyond technology, positively impacting their overall self-esteem and outlook on life.

For the students, the Senior Smart Series is a great opportunity to earn SSL (Student Service Learning) hours needed for graduation AND to give back to the community. For the older adults, it is a chance to get hands-on, one-on-one tutorial training.
