A water leak at Alexander House on Second Avenue in Silver Spring resulted in the evacuation of residents in 166 units, with the possibility that more could be affected.
According to Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, a sprinkler pipe ruptured from the 17th floor to the basement, affecting electrical utility service in the building.
Some residents are experiencing utility outages.
Assisting at the scene are personnel from the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Department of Housing and Community Affairs, the Housing Opportunities Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Permitting Services.
