State titles in reach for several hoops teams

Montgomery County is well represented in both boys and girls high school basketball in the Maryland public school state playoffs. Three boys teams and two girls squads have made the semi-finals this week in their respective divisions.

James Hubert Blake, Magruder and Walt Whitman are on the doorstep of a state crown in boys hoops. Richard Montgomery and Whitman are also just two wins away from hoisting the championship trophy in girls basketball.

The Walt Whitman girls are in the midst of a historical run. The top seeded Vikings are 24-0 and they will face Charles H. Flowers in the Class 4A semi-final Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from Montgomery Blair High School. Whitman, led by coach Pete Kenah, had never gone unbeaten in the regular season until this year.

In the other Class 4A girls semi-final, Richard Montgomery faces Western High out of Baltimore. The Rockets are the No. 2 seed and have enjoyed a 22-3 mark. This matchup will also be played at Montgomery Blair at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Magruder boys basketball will meet Frederick, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Richard Montgomery High School. The winner will advance to the the Class 3A state championship. The Colonials, led by legendary coach Dan Harwood have gone 23-2 so far.

In Class 4A boys basketball, both James Hubert Blake and Walt Whitman are one win away from an all Montgomery County final. Blake will play Meade at North County High School Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Whitman will go up against top seed Charles H. Flowers Tuesday at 6:30 pm. from Dr. Henry A. Wise High School.

The championship games will take place March 12-14 at University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
