Students Bike, Roll to School on May 7

In celebration of Bike and Roll to School Day, Montgomery County residents are invited to join community bike rides on Wednesday, May 7.

The Takoma Park Police Department is inviting all students to join a community bike ride to school on Wednesday, May 7. The bike escort will begin at 7:30 a.m., with students meeting at 7620 Maple Avenue for the start of the ride. The event will be led by one marked police vehicle, along with several officers on bicycles. The first stop will be Piney Branch Elementary School, where additional students can join the group.

From there, participants will continue to Takoma Park Elementary School and end the ride at Takoma Park Middle School.

“This is a great opportunity for students to enjoy an active start to their day while learning about bike safety,” said a spokesperson from the Takoma Park Police Department. “We’re excited to support our young riders and help build a stronger connection between students, families, and the community.”

Meanwhile, from 8 to 9 a.m., Forest Knolls Elementary School in Silver Spring will also hold its own celebration of Bike and Roll to School Day. Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, along with representatives from the County Department of Transportation, will be in attendance.

Special activities will include music, an appearance from Zeal, the Traffic Safety Zebra, safety material distribution, and Sparky, the fire and rescue dog. This event is meant to promote bike safety and encourage students to adopt active commuting as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Bike safety reflectors will be distributed, and families are reminded to ensure that children are wearing appropriate safety gear, including helmets.
