According to a WalletHub study released Wednesday, outcomes for Maryland youth rank higher than 44 other states. The six states with more favorable outcomes include Massachusetts (#1), New Hampshire (#2), New Jersey (#3), Utah (#4), Virginia (#5), and Connecticut (#6). Maryland was ranked 7th.

To determine where young Americans are most at risk of adverse outcomes in adulthood, Wallet Hub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The study looked at 15 data points including youth poverty rate, number of teen pregnancies, teen drug use, and mental health rates. Youth refers to the population aged 18 to 24.

WalletHub obtained data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, The Nation’s Report Card, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, John Burton Advocates for Youth, U.S. Department of Defense – The Office of People Analytics, and the National Center for Juvenile Justice.
