Maryland ranks fourth in WalletHub’s “2024’s Greenest States” report, released on April 10. The top five environmentally friendly states are California, Vermont, New York, Maryland, and Washington. West Virginia ranks the least friendly.

WalletHub’s ranking considers environment quality (air, water, and soil), eco-friendly behaviors (e.g., green buildings per person, solar capacity), and harmful emissions (carbon dioxide, ethane, and nitrous oxide per capita). Maryland ranks 11th for environment quality, fifth for eco-friendly behaviors, and sixth for climate-change contributions, with an overall score of 74.35.

WalletHub ranks specific environmental indicators for Maryland from 1 (greenest) to 25 (average). Data were collected from various sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau and Environmental Protection Agency, as of March 20, 2024. For more information, see the report “2024’s Greenest States.”
