Summer Reading Challenge Registration Opens May 15

Residents of all ages are invited to tap into their creativity this summer through Montgomery County Public Libraries’ annual Summer Reading Challenge. Starting June 14 and running through Sunday, Aug. 31, the 2025 program theme is “Color Our World,” celebrating the arts, storytelling and cultural expression.

With activities for children, teens and adults, the initiative encourages communitywide engagement through reading and creative exploration. Registration begins Thursday, May 15, both online and at all participating MCPL branches.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way for kids, teens and adults to stay engaged, be creative and enjoy learning together. I hope everyone in our community will participate. It’s about more than reading—it’s about connection, exploration and ensuring everyone has access to enriching experiences,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich.

The program officially starts with three kickoff events featuring hands-on activities for families:

  • Saturday, June 14, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. – Twinbrook Library, Rockville

  • Saturday, June 21, 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. – Germantown Library

  • Sunday, June 22, 2–4 p.m. – Chevy Chase Library

Participants can receive awards by logging books read and completing themed activities. Children ages 0–12 can unlock digital badges tied to local arts partners by completing age-appropriate literacy challenges. Teens ages 13–17 will have the opportunity to earn exclusive prizes through reading challenges and creative engagement.
