
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maryland obtained a $1.4 million judgment against a family doctor practicing in Takoma Park. The doctor was cited for submitting false claims or causing false claims to be submitted to Medicare.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Dr. Richard Akoto used a P-stim device to treat patients for pain. That device provides electrical acupuncture and is used externally. Acupuncture is not reimbursable by Medicare.
Akoto submitted false claims between January of 2019 and May of 2019 stating he used surgical implants.
“This type of fraud not only wastes taxpayer dollars, it also undermines trust in our healthcare system,” said U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes in a news release. She called his alleged actions “unconscionable.”
