Thurmont’s Cunningham Falls State Park Announces Temporary Closure

Starting in April and extending into the summer months, a sewer line renovation and replacement project along Maryland Route 77 will temporarily close some activities in the William Houck Area of Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont.

The project, spearheaded by the Maryland Environmental Service with cooperation from the Maryland State Highway Administration and the Maryland Park Service, includes excavating and replacing aging underground sewer lines that provide service to the William Houck Area of Cunningham Falls State Park.

The closure will impact areas such as the William Houck Area Campground, Hunting Creek Lake, and the falls. The lake area and campground will close beginning April 1. Limited access to Cunningham Falls will be available via the trail accessed from Catoctin Mountain Park. The Manor Area and Catoctin Furnace will remain open during the closure. All areas are expected to reopen no later than July, depending on project completion and weather conditions.

The park will contact and refund campers with reservations for the affected time.

Project updates will be available on the Cunningham Falls State Park website.
