Two coaches from Montgomery County get big jobs in NFL

Mike Rutenberg and Brian Fleury grew up in Montgomery County dreaming of playing in the NFL someday. While neither made it to the highest level as players, they are rising through the NFL coaching ranks and both recently got big promotions.

The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks hired Fleury as the team’s offensive coordinator. Fleury played quarterback at Seneca Valley High School and then walked on at the University of Maryland. He transferred to Towson University to finish his playing career in 2002.

Fleury began his NFL coaching career with Buffalo in 2013. He was in San Francisco as the tight end coach before making the recent move to Seattle.

Rutenberg, who graduated from Landon in 1999, was named the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. Rutenberg was the Atlanta passing game defensive coordinator until being hired by the Browns. He started his coaching career as an intern with Washington under legendary coach Joe Gibbs.
