Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
March 1, 2026 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Gallery B, 7700 Wisconsin Ave E, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA
| Painters Kathleen Byrnes and Jennifer Howard exhibit their works at Gallery B in November 2025
Kathleen Byrnes has taken to working plein aire, challenging her to work quickly and spontaneously. Byrnes uses the environment to infuse the canvas with mood and emotion. Working in predominantly oil, Byrnes has produced works that explore the light and structure of urban Washington DC, the Virginia and Maryland country side, as well as the inlets, bay, ocean and marshlands of Southern New Jersey. Jennifer Howard is a painter and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Washington, DC for over 37 years. Her paintings are about the moment, the immediacy of paint applied honestly, thickly and emotionally on canvas. She strives to convey a textural quality to the surface with layers of color and an emphasis on capturing light.
The exhibition runs from November 6 – November 30. Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-5pm, and Sundays 11am-2pm. The gallery will be closed November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Little Miss Perfect
Little Miss Perfect
March 1, 2026 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USA
Joriah Kwamé became a viral TikTok star with his song "Little Miss Perfect," which garnered millions of views and launched this new musical with Broadway aspirations. High school kids are under a lot of pressure. Just ask Noelle, who has lived up to expectations of perfection her whole life, even as she's attempted to blend in as one of the few Black students at a predominantly white school. But now it's senior year, and a scholarship to Howard University is within her reach —if she can demonstrate leadership skills. With an irresistible mix of hip-hop, showtunes, and pop sounds, Little Miss Perfect distills Noelle's journey as she seeks to escape her small Midwestern town. Joriah's hit songs "Little Miss Perfect" and "Ordinary" feature prominently, and you'll be humming the new numbers - like "Black Girl Magic," "Malaya's Words," and "Legendary" by the time the curtain falls.

March First Friday Celebrates Artists & Makers Studios 11th Anniversary
March 6, 2026 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Artists & Makers Studios, 11810 Parklawn Dr Suite 210, Rockville, MD 20852, USA
Artists & Makers Studios is Celebrating 11 Years! “Focus Pocus: Macrophotography” with Rick Ruggles Mini-Solo for Patricia de Poel Wilberg
(Rockville, MD) – Artists & Makers Studios is pleased to host Rick Ruggles for the month of March and A&M’s 11th anniversary celebration. The exhibit will run from March 4th through March 25th, with a First Friday opening on March 6th from 5-8pm. Aiming his eye at the small details in everyday life, Rick explores the sometimes magical, often mysterious beauty in his field of view. The subject matter is not always obvious, and often mysterious. The simplest frequently pedestrian textures & colors and shadows & patterns, are captured by smartphone, capable of yielding surprising depth and clarity, with the potential for larger scale presentation than viewers might expect. Rick is captivated by the remarkable mundane in daily life. Rust, corrosion, failing paint, street structure, botanicals- all seem to seek Rick’s eye. He captures images in ways that are abstract, sometimes surreal, usually challenging the viewer to identify the subjects. His love of wordplay guides his offbeat choices for titles, doubling his delight, and hopefully that of viewers as well. Patricia de Poel Wilberg will hang a mini-solo exhibit in the Lounge Gallery. Enjoy the sculptural work of Francis Maduka Uduh in studio 11, along with nineteen Gallery 209 Member Artists exhibiting their latest work. Open Studios building-wide will welcome visitors to visit and learn. Shop and support local working artists, makers, and professionals. Light fare generously sponsored each month by The Chesapeake Framing Company.

Artist'sOpening Reception - the beachKraft Presents "Ecumenical Oddities" by J.D. Brayton
Artist'sOpening Reception - the beachKraft Presents "Ecumenical Oddities" by J.D. Brayton
March 7, 2026 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
the beachKraft, 18200 Georgia Ave Unit N + O, Olney, MD 20832, USA
Local artist J.D. Brayton will present “Ecumenical Oddities”, a solo art show at the beachKraft Gallery in Olney, MD, on view March 7 – March 28, 2025.
The beachKraft StudioGallery of Olney will host an Opening Reception for the artist on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 5:00pm-7:00pm.
An associated Poetry Night event, featuring headlining poets, Richard Peabody and Edward Doyle-Gillespe, will be held on Thursday, March 12 from 8:00pm-10:00pm.
J.D. Brayton is a local artist in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area working in mixed media and assemblage techniques. J.D. is also an accomplished musician and writer, he writes historical fiction, short stories and “Post-Gonzo Crime Pulp” novels including “The Clabber Grrrl’s Retreat” and “EYE SKIN”.
J.D. is a master of Venetian plaster Trompe-l’œil painting techniques and integrates this with primitive styles and found objects in his mixed media paintings, assemblage and functional artwork. His catalog of artworks includes paintings on both found-objects and traditional stretched canvas, assemblage pieces which integrate recycled and up-cycled elements with metal work and traditional painting. He also creates a series of functional storage trunks which combine Trompe-l’œil painting of inlay and Venetian plaster with metal tooling and other embellishment.
While J.D. has not had formal training and is self-taught as a visual artist, he regards art as “THE Temple,” and finds himself “constantly fascinated by the classic Arts”. However, he states that he does not “feel compulsion to join in the confines of perfect symmetry or orthodoxy,” noting that “it is not unusual for Artists to wander the earth filling their pockets and workshop with discarded objects, rusted auto parts or lids off soup cans. To the uninspired eye these broken things need to be thrown away, to an Artist they merely need to be included in a frozen moment of transmutation.” J.D. is inspired to create art because “tin can sing. Rust can breathe. “
J.D.‘s work communicates to the unique human experience informed by our contemporary surroundings, but appropriates and re-imagines themes from Classical Western art styles and content.
The beachKraft Gallery is excited to show a selection of paintings, assemblage and functional works throughout the month of March.
See J.D. Brayton‘s artwork at the gallery, Tuesday through Sunday, 12:30 PM to 7 PM.
An opening reception will be held for the artist on Saturday March 7, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Light refreshment will be available to guests.
An associated Poetry Night event, featuring headlining poets, Richard Peabody and Edward Doyle-Gillespe, will be held on Thursday, March 12 from 8:00pm-10:00pm.
Artist receptions at the gallery are always free to attend. Poetry night is free to attend. To be a presenting poet, email thebeachkraft@gmail.com with your proposal.

March 8, 2026 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

25th Annual Kiplinger Lecture on Ethics in American Society
25th Annual Kiplinger Lecture on Ethics in American Society
March 8, 2026 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 9601 Cedar Ln, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA
|
We are living in a moment when values, morals, and ethics in governing seem to be fading as the foundation of governing and at the same time power seems to be ascending as a touchstone. The annual Kiplinger Lecture and its historical basis in the importance of ethics in American society could not be more timely. Sylvia Mathews Burwell speaks to what it means to govern with a moral compass: to place the common good above personal or political gain, to lead with care in deeply divided times, and the importance of the difference between power and authority. Join us for an engaging conversation about why ethics still belong at the heart of government, and what public service demands.
Sylvia Mathews Burwell is a distinguished public servant who was recently the 15th President of American University, from 2017 to 2024. Prior to that, she was the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and earlier the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), under President Obama. Before OMB, she was President of the Walmart Foundation and also was President of the Global Development Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She also served as Deputy Director of OMB, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Treasury, and Staff Director of the National Economic Council. She is currently President of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University, her alma mater. She was also a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. She hails from Hinton, West Virginia and she and her husband Stephen live in Washington, DC with their two teenage children.
RSVP Today. Please let us know how many people to expect by registering in advance for this FREE event. And please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes in advance to have the best chance of finding a seat in the main hall. We will also have overflow seating available in the Library with sound and video.

Gallery B Presents "Color + Light, Part Two"
March 15, 2026 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ searing satire of a family digging through their recently deceased patriarch’s crumbling estate is both gut-splittingly funny and shocking in its confrontation of conveniently forgotten family history. DC-luminaries Kimberly Gilbert (Angels in America) and Cody Nickell (Ink) star as siblings battling over the possession and meaning of their father’s dark patrimony. As the rest of the family descends on the ancestral property in rural Arkansas, old rivalries and grudges are eclipsed by the moral weight of what they find. Our Universal Theatrical Heritage: The Family Destroyed by Secrets
March 21, 2026 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USA
No one writes a family drama better than American playwrights, and Appropriate is the latest entry in what the Washington Post called, in its 2013 review of the play, as “our universal theatrical heritage: the family destroyed by secrets”. A forceful, contemporary response to a century’s worth of great works, from All My Sons to Fences to August: Osage County, Appropriate traverses familiar terrain until it suddenly explodes, turbocharging the characters’ journey to its stunning end Join us for a Behind-the-Scenes conversation with Artistic Director Jason Loewith (who also directs Appropriate) and three veteran DMV actors – Rick Foucheux, Craig Wallace, and Erika Rose – who have tackled some of the American family drama’s most iconic roles. How did those plays pave the way for Appropriate?

Appropriate
March 21, 2026 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USA
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ searing satire of a family digging through their recently deceased patriarch’s crumbling estate is both gut-splittingly funny and shocking in its confrontation of conveniently forgotten family history. DC-luminaries Kimberly Gilbert (Angels in America) and Cody Nickell (Ink) star as siblings battling over the possession and meaning of their father’s dark patrimony. As the rest of the family descends on the ancestral property in rural Arkansas, old rivalries and grudges are eclipsed by the moral weight of what they find. Staged in our black box Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab, this will be a unique staging of one of the most important American plays of the past 15 years.

In the documentary directed by Richard Hall, author Mike Tidwell gives a tour of his neighborhood, the inspiration for his book. Using one square block, the film shows how the consequences of climate change can be seen on any spot on the planet.
