October First Friday with Open Studios and Women Artists of the DMV
October 3, 2025
Artists & Makers Studios, 11810 Parklawn Dr Suite 210, Rockville, MD 20852, USA
Artists & Makers Studios is thrilled to host the largest ever-curated fine arts multi-venue show in the U.S. coming this Fall to 18+ art venues around the Greater Washington, DC capital region as curator Florencio Lennox Campello surveys over 500+ female artists actively working around the DMV. The exhibit will run from September 4th through October 29th, with the next opening on October 3rd from 5-8pm. Featuring the work of over 500+ women artists from the Greater Washington, DC capital region, this massive survey exhibition is curated by Florencio Lennox Campello, whose curatorial background extends to over 200 exhibitions over the past four decades. “This region is not only home to some of the best art museums in the world, dozens of commercial art galleries, non-profit art spaces, alternative art venues, embassy art spaces, and fine arts organizations, but it also supports and fertilizes some of the most unique and creative visual art scenes in the nation,” notes Campello. Why this show? To survey the key, established female artists of the capital region, mid-career artists, and just as important, identify the emerging female artists who can benefit from this large-scale exposure. All genres of the visual arts, to include public art, will be showcased and each selected artist will have one work selected by the curator. Enjoy 45 artists in the Women’s exhibit, a Pop-Up with Naan Pocen, the sculptural work of Francis Maduka Uduh in studio 11, along with nineteen Gallery 209 Member Artists exhibiting their latest work. Open Studios building-wide will welcome visitors to visit and learn. Shop and support local working artists, makers, and professionals. Light fare and beverages are sponsored monthly by The Chesapeake Framing Company.

The Right to Suburbia by Willow Lung-Amam
October 4, 2025 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USA
In recent decades, America’s suburbs have transformed—becoming denser, more diverse, and more contested spaces. Yet with rising redevelopment and gentrification, immigrant, working-class, and communities of color are often asked to bear the costs while others reap the benefits.
Drawing from her book The Right to Suburbia, scholar Willow Lung-Amam will share stories of activists, community groups, and political leaders in the DC suburbs fighting for their “right to suburbia”—the right to stay, belong, and thrive in the midst of rapid change. Together, we’ll explore how the themes of Red Pitch resonate not just in city neighborhoods, but across the suburban landscapes so many call home.

About this event
In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings.
Our peaceful movement is only getting bigger and stronger. “NO KINGS” is more than just a slogan—it’s the foundation our nation was built upon. Born in the streets, carried by millions in chants and on posters, it echoes from city blocks to rural town squares, uniting people across this country to fight dictatorship together.
The president thinks his rule is absolute. But in America, we don’t have kings, and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty. On October 18, we'll meet at the flagpole next to Whalen Commons at noon with our signs, flags, finest resistance T-shirts, and enthusiastic voices. We'll fan out along the sidewalk single file growing our line of solidarity toward the elementary school in one direction and toward the center of town in the other. Join us as we line up for democracy!
Parking is available at Whalen Commons and nearby shopping centers, but please leave spaces closest to businesses open for their customers.
A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

For the Protection of Girls and Women – The Crisis of Jewish “White Slavery,” 1880-1920
For the Protection of Girls and Women – The Crisis of Jewish “White Slavery,” 1880-1920
October 19, 2025 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
A rarely-discussed crisis in the worldwide Jewish community occurred during the Jewish emigration boom of 1880-1920. Eastern European Jewish girls and young women, desperate to change their circumstances, were being deceived or coerced by Jewish human traffickers and sold into prostitution. Jewish women in London, living in the emigration crossroads, led an international fight to combat “white slavery,” as it was then known. They were soon joined by American women, and others, who enacted schemes to protect the vulnerable but also lobbied for legislation against the traffickers. This presentation will discuss the circumstances that allowed these crimes to occur, and the organizational and government responses. Finally, one woman’s tragic story.
This one-hour program, conducted over Zoom at 1:30 PM Eastern Time, is free for members. This is one of the many activities that is a benefit of JGSGW membership. Instructions for joining the online meeting will be placed under Meeting Info & Links in the Members Only Files. (These files become visible on this website after members sign in.) Nonmembers may register to attend for a fee of $10. |

Azaria is an acclaimed voice artist, perhaps best known for his decades of work on The Simpsons. Now, he’s using his voice in a new and different way and having a blast entertaining people in a live concert setting. Azaria spent months creating an impression of Bruce’s distinctive speaking cadence and singing ‘voice’ to conceive a tribute show, and the resulting performance is a soul-lifting, full-tilt rock ’n roll event you don’t want to miss. For more about the project, visit: https://www.ezstreetnyc.com/new
The artist’s net proceeds will benefit The Four Through Nine Foundation, which was founded by Azaria and is committed to social justice, education and recovery causes — “I can’t think of a better way to spend my time and use my passion for voices than playing these songs for a crowd that loves them and to lovingly pay tribute to Bruce, while raising money for folks who need it.”
Tickets are $45 Regular, $43 Seniors, $5 Students with Valid ID (Student tickets must be purchased at the box office.)
