Suspect in Valentine’s Day murder of Potomac senior declared incompetent

The man who allegedly murdered a millionaire resident of a Potomac senior living facility was declared incompetent to stand trial, at least for the immediate future.

Maurquise James, 22, is accused of fatally shooting 87-year-old Robert Fuller Jr. in his bed on Valentine’s Day 2026 at the Cogir of Potomac assisted living facility, a place where his mother was also worked in a supervisory role.

James is also connected to the murder by bullet casings of shots fired at a state trooper in Baltimore in February of this year. Those charges include attempted first-degree murder, felony assault and other gun related charges.

Appearing briefly in Montgomery County Circuit Court, James was declared a danger to himself and others. A judge ordered that he be committed to a state mental hospital. His competency will be evaluated again in six months.

The Fuller murder charge will be adjudicated before James is brought to trial in Baltimore City for the attempted murder of the trooper.
