Wheaton High Wrestling Season Cut Short Due to Use of Ineligible Athlete

Wheaton High School’s wrestling season ended prematurely on Jan. 27 following the discovery of an illegible student-athlete on the team, per an email from the school’s principal, Josh Munsey.

An illegible student-athlete competing for Wheaton violates Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA)’s and MCPS’s athletic rules.

According to the email, sent out to the community on Feb. 2, the penalties outlined by the MPSSAA Handbook are that the team cannot compete for the championship, and their individual results and final four dual meet matches will be forfeited.

The Parent’s Coalition of Montgomery County wrote a response letter to this decision, outlining their frustration with the decision-making process and a request to reinstate Wheaton’s wrestling season. They also requested an investigation of the administration’s behavior and a public apology.

Their main point: “why is this being assessed as a team violation rather than a coaching violation?”

No update has been made on the decision.
